CUSTOM BUNK BED
The Build
Designed and constructed a custom built-in bunk bed for my two boys, complete with a Star Wars theme.
Details
I first designed the build in Fusion 360 in order to figure out a bed orientation that would work well for the space. We decided to steer away from a traditional design and instead the top bunk 90 degrees relative to the bottom bunk. This provided an additional space to add a small desk. The design also incorporated an awkward nook in the corner of the room in order to add personal shelving for each bunk, where the kids could put books or other items.
For the railings and ladder, I knew I wanted them to be metal to match the desired aesthetic. So, I designed them to the exact dimensions needed and found a local fabricator to weld and powder coat them.
Hiccups
Once I had the railing installed, I realized there was one major failure in my design: they were too far from the matress and left a large enough gap for a child to fit through. To address this, I created some panels to attach to the railings and used my Shaper Origin to add Star Wars lettering to each of them, which ended up working out nicely as it tied into the overall theme.
